Currently, around 10,000 people call Whistler their permanent home and the population explodes to around 50,000 during the peak periods. The local community is very active, with an enthusiastic commitment to protecting the environment surrounding us and to become a more sustainable resort community. The village has a town hall, fire and police station/s, medical clinic, museum, library, and more than 200 shops and 90 restaurants. In only 25 years, Whistler has gone from a small wilderness recreation community formerly known as Alta Lake to the world famous resort destination it is today.

Averaging over 10 metres (33ft) of annual snowfall, Whistler is a snow enthusiast playground. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains offer over one mile of vertical and the largest skiable terrain area of any ski resort in North America. Whistler has large alpine bowls, glades tree runs and more groomed runs than any other resort. Along with the longest season in North America, Whistler has four terrain parks for those who prefer to spend as much time in the air as they do on the ground. Whether fast, groomed runs or steep and deep technical lines are your things, you will find something to challenge (and scare) you. Ski-in/ski-out accommodation exists in Whistler, equalling or exceeding any other North American mountain resort in that regard.
